Marvelous in March

Hello, everyone. It’s time for another blog!

This time it’s Marvelous in March.

An interesting thing that happened is I shaved my beard! I have decided to shave once a year and this is my second year doing it. (Every tradition starts somewhere right?) Some people loved the clean shave and others didn’t. I liked it but it’s not something I would like to keep for months.

A marvelous thing that happened is that I had another Mi Gente event! This time Andrea and I decided to try and make Gorditas. We were nervous about getting the mass right but overall we did a good job. The only problem was we didn’t have a proper way of heating up the Gorditas since we didn’t have a comal, a comal is a flat round cast iron skillet. People loved all of the different toppings and the fillings were amazing, especially the eggs with chile rojo.

Another marvelous experience I had this month was our spiritual retreat day, which is a day the campus pastors set apart to connect with God in unique ways at least once a semester. A couple of the pastors at UTD went to Eisenhower State Park just outside of Oklahoma in Denison Texas. It was sunny with a nice breeze, which was perfect weather for a day at the park. I ended up buying a hammock to use during our day and brought a book to read while I was there. It was nice to slow down and enjoy God’s presence in a world where we are always going from place to place. I would encourage all of y’all to take a day to slow down and enjoy all the good things God has given us. (Small side note, I ended up having like 20 tiny spiders in my water bottle and I have no idea how that happened or why)

Another marvelous thing that happened was I ended up leading a small section during our peer team meeting. Our group of leaders (corefas) have leader meetings and peer team meetings throughout the school year. Peer team meetings are separated by gender and leader meetings are the entire group together. During this month's peer team meeting I ended up leading a section on vampires and surgeons. This habitude covered how we should approach having bold conversations with the guys we are leading. Both vampires and surgeons take blood from a person but surgeons improve life while vampires drain life away. It was a marvelous thing to do, I loved it.

Another marvelous event this month was Rez Fair. Rez (Resurrection) Fair is a way that FOCUS along with all of the other campus ministries at UTD (there are 18 campus ministries at UTD) celebrate Easter. We had a multitude of great activities including live worship music, booths informing students about our campus ministries, carnival games and raffles to participate in. It was a fun time and a great day!

My final marvelous experience was Spring Outreach Week (SOW.) SOW is when students from Western Washington University come down and do outreach events at UTD for an entire week. They came down this past Sunday (3/24) and will leave the next Saturday (3/30.) Each day we had a different outreach activity. On Monday, we went around washing people’s shoes in an effort to serve UTD students and teach them about Jesus washing his disciples’ feet. On Tuesday, we went around asking people what burdens they wanted lifted and wrote them down on pieces of wood to “nail” (super glue) to a cross, reflecting how Jesus died for our sins. On Wednesday, we had Rez Fair. On Thursday, we went back to the cross but this time we asked people what are qualities of a redeemed world. They again wrote them on pieces of wood and used them to cover up the burdens of this world. This Friday, we have a fun day so we will go around and explore Dallas with the Washington students. Please pray with me that they have a safe trip back home and that this time was meaningful for them to learn how to outreach once they go back to their own campus.

Also pray for me as the semester comes to an end. Pray that our students can finish the semester strong and be able to go into the summer with a stronger and deeper understanding of who Jesus is. Pray with me that as the semester ends we are able to finish well and lead our students to love God.

Thank you so much for the support and the impact that you are having on our students!

Student Testimony Time!

Every month, we feature a student’s testimony of how their time in FOCUS has grown and shaped them. Here is this month’s:
